The 10% Rule Every Dog Parent Should Know

The most loving thing you do for your dog every day might be quietly working against them.

Treats.

Here's something most pet parents are never told: the 10% rule. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories. The other 90% comes from their complete, balanced food.

So a dog who needs 500 calories a day? That's a treat budget of just ~50 calories.

It sounds strict. But go over it regularly and you're not spoiling your dog โ€” you're slowly unbalancing their diet and stacking the odds toward obesity, which affects a large share of pet dogs today.

The problem isn't that you treat your dog. It's what you reach for.

Most treats burn that tiny 10% budget on empty calories โ€” fillers, sugar, things you can't pronounce. You spend the budget and your dog gets nothing back.

That's the entire reason we built Follow The Tail. We asked a simple question: what if every treat had to earn its place in that 10%? So we make snacks that do two jobs at once โ€”

  • Functional, not filler โ€” natural ingredients backed by veterinary science, formulated to support real health, not just tail wags.
  • Clean enough to read โ€” if you can't pronounce it, it's not going in.
  • Made to be loved โ€” because a healthy treat your dog refuses to eat helps no one.

A treat shouldn't be a guilty trade-off. Done right, it's one of the easiest ways to invest in your dog's long-term health โ€” a few times a day, every day.

So here's our challenge to you this week: do the math on your dog's treat budget. Then look at the label on what you're feeding it. If the ingredients don't earn their place, it might be time to upgrade the snack โ€” not cut it.

Healthier treats. Longer, happier tails.

What's the one ingredient you always check for before buying a treat?
