If Your Business Needs a Hero, You Don't Have a Business

If your business only works when you're in the room, you don't own a business. You own a job that pays worse than a job.

I learned this the hard way running a franchise in the US, and then again — more brutally — when I started running several businesses at once. You cannot be the hero in four places simultaneously. The moment you try, every one of them stalls the day you look away.

Early on, most founders quietly run on heroics. A big client is unhappy? The founder jumps in and saves it. A shipment is late? The founder personally chases it. It feels like leadership. It's actually a warning light. Every save you make by force is a system you haven't built.

A few things that shift taught me:

1. Heroics don't scale; systems do. A hero handles one crisis brilliantly. A system prevents the next hundred quietly. If solving a problem depends on a specific person's memory, relationships, or willpower, you don't have a solution — you have a single point of failure with a pulse.

2. The goal is to make yourself the least necessary person in the room. Counterintuitive, but the strongest sign of a well-run operation is how boring it is when the founder is away. If things get exciting when you leave, that's not loyalty — it's fragility.

3. Document the boring stuff first. Nobody wants to write down how the invoicing works or how a customer complaint gets handled. That boring, repeatable middle is exactly where businesses either compound or quietly break.

The franchise model made this obvious: it works because a stranger can walk in and run it from a manual, not because a genius is behind the counter. That's not a limitation. That's the whole point.

Ask yourself honestly: if you disappeared for a month, would your business run — or would it hold its breath until you got back?
