The US and India Each Do Brilliantly What the Other Struggles With

I spent 15 years building businesses in the US, then came home to build in India. Each place is brilliant at exactly the thing the other struggles with.

I say this with affection for both. After enough years on both sides, the contrast stops being a cliché and becomes a genuinely useful toolkit — if you're willing to steal from both.

What the US does exceptionally well is systems and trust in process. A well-run American business assumes the person will leave, so it builds the process to survive them. Documentation, playbooks, clean handoffs, institutions you can rely on. It's why a US company can scale a mediocre idea into a machine — the operating system carries it.

What India does exceptionally well is resourcefulness and relationships. Give an Indian operator a constraint that would freeze a Western team — no budget, no infrastructure, a rule that makes no sense — and they'll find three ways around it by lunch. Business runs on trust between people, not just contracts. It's why Indian founders survive conditions that would sink a better-funded competitor.

Now the honest part — each strength has a shadow:

The US can over-trust the process. When the manual becomes the point, teams optimise for following steps instead of getting outcomes. Process can quietly replace thinking.

India can under-build the system. When everything runs on a hero's relationships and jugaad, the business can't outgrow the founder — it stays personal, and personal doesn't scale.

The best operators I've met borrow across the gap. They pair American discipline — build the system, write it down, make yourself replaceable — with Indian adaptability — stay resourceful, keep the relationships human, don't let the process eat the judgment.

Neither culture has the complete answer. The edge is in taking the strength of one to patch the blind spot of the other.
